This page is an overview of the courses that I took during the MAED program.  For each course, I have included examples of coursework.  My concentration was in Mathematics and Science Education while my electives were in Technology and Learning.

TE 802: Reflect and Inquiry Teaching Practices I
Instructor:  Rebecca Norman
Course Description: We examined the quality of a variety of teaching methods and determined its effectiveness on learning with quantitative measurements.  We established criteria to determine if the research-based knowledge was valid and applicable.  Designed and created inquiry based units for student learning which we assessed and evaluated for effectiveness.

TE 803: Professional Roles and Teaching Practices II
Instructor: Elizabeth Heilman
Course Description:  Developed relationships with the community to help assist student learning.  Strategies were established to work with families and community organizations to improve the school curriculum in order to meet students’ needs.

TE 804: Reflect and Inquiry Teaching Practices II
Instructor:  C. Schwarz
Course Description:  We collected, analyzed, and reviewed data within the classroom to determine its effectiveness on teaching and learning.  We discussed and reported the results of our inquiry.

ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Instructor: Dr. Steve Weiland
Course Description:  ED 800 is an introductory course that examines different forms of educational inquiry.  Each unit focused on an educational philosopher.  We studied their theories and practices in teaching and learning.  Some of these influential thinkers include Dewey, E.D. Hirsch, Vivian Paley, Howard Gardner, Philip Cusick, and Mary Catherine Bateson.

TE 861C: Action Research K-12 Science Math Classroom
Instructor: Adriane M. Slaton
Course Description:  This course introduced the steps, ideas, and concepts behind action research.  We were able to design our own action research project in either the science or math classroom.  I designed my research project on how to meet the needs of my low performing math students by progress monitoring.

TE 831: Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Instructor: Erik Jon Byker
Course Description:  This course presented an excellent overview of a variety of different technologies.  These include Digital Storytelling, Voicethread, Glogs, Wordle, and class websites, wikis, and blogs.  We learned about the affordances and constraints of each technology.  We also studied the importance of the idea of TPACK.  TPACK has three essential areas of knowledge that include content, pedagogy, and technology which all must be understood and integrated to be successful.

TE 855: Teaching School Mathematics
Instructor: Kristen Bieda
Course Description:  This course focused on the strategies and methods of teaching mathematics.  The course emphasized the importance of teaching for conceptual understanding.  We also learned about developing differentiated lessons for diverse learners and evaluating student progress. 
Research on how teachers help students to learn how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions with reason.

Spring 2011
CEP 805: Learning Math with Technology
Instructor: Ralph Putnam
Course Description:  In this course, we studied each strand of math and found current technologies that would help enhance the learning of that concept for students.  We created a math online resource library that analyzed the standard being addressed, the content being learned, the type of understanding, the role the technology plays, the instructional function, and the kinds of representations utilized.

CEP 810: Teaching Understanding with Technology
Instructor: Susan Way
Course Description:  This course presented many web-based resources that could be used to enhance teaching and learning not only for students but for teachers as well.  Some of the technologies we learned about and utilized include the following: RSS feeds, blogs, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Social Networking, Social Bookmarking, Twitter, and Wikis.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar
Instructor: Dr. Matthew J. Koehler
Course Description:  This course provided the opportunity to synthesize and reflect upon the online masters program, MAED.  This online portfolio was created during this course.  Not only did it allow me to showcase the work that has been completed during this master’s program, but it also allowed me to set goals for my future as a learner.
